LOWNDES — The 64th Annual Lowndes County Ham & Egg Show came to an end Wednesday with the auctioning off of the show’s signature cured hams and eggs by the dozen.

Sheena Perry's Grand Champion ham, weighing in at 22 pounds, sold for $25 a pound to Cass Burch Automotive Group for a total of $550. Charlie Flannigan's Reserve Champion ham, weighing in at 17 pounds, sold for $14 a pound to Ag Georgia Farm Credit for a total of $238. The second place Youth Ham, cured by Caleb Berrian and weighing in at 19 pounds, sold for $12 a pound to the Calvin Marshall Construction Company for a total of $228. The second place adult ham, cured by Velma Miles and weighing in at 16 pounds, sold for $10 a pound to New Life Bible Church Valdosta for a total of $160.

On the egg side of things, Anna Claire Price's Grand Champion dozen sold for $300 to the Cass Burch Automotive Group, who also picked up Ruben Battle's Reserve Champion dozen for $100.

An Appreciation Award was also presented to retired Lowndes County Extension Agent Calvin Willis for his work with the show.

A Buyer's Breakfast will be held Thursday morning at 6 a.m. at the Holiday Inn.

Ham & Egg shows like the one held locally were once a fixture across the state of Georgia, but now Lowndes County's is the only one still running every year, and Arletha Sermons has been there for most of them.

This year marks

Sermons 52nd Ham & Egg show and he can remember back when nightwatchmen were hired to keep an eye on the hams overnight. While he hasn't entered a ham since 2004, his son, Johnny, and grandson, Bryan, keep the tradition alive.

“It was designed to improve our living situations,” said Arletha. “Everybody had a few hogs and a few chickens...That was back in the pretty good times.”
