Valdosta High Debate Team wins honors

VALDOSTA — Valdosta High School Debate Team has won several awards recently as well as continued its weekend travels throughout the state.

The team finished its inaugural season last weekend at the Jackson High School Tournament in Butts County.

Sophomore Lorna Chitty took second place in the Lincoln Douglas debate at the Jimmy Carter Invitational earlier this month. The win secured her bid to compete at the Georgia Varsity State Tournament of Champions, which will be held March 7-9 in Macon.

Freshman Nada Kent won a speaking award medal in public forum debate at the Jackson High School competition.

Freshman Amber Washington won third place in humorous interpretation at the Jackson High School tournament.

A total of 22 VHS students earned bids to compete in the Georgia Novice State Tournament, said team coach Pam Childress. This tournament will be held from Feb. 7-9 in Marietta.

Fall 2013 marked the first time in 15 years that Valdosta High has sponsored a debate team.

Childress and the team traveled and competed extensively throughout the state. The team also visited CNN and the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library.

The VHS Debate Team is seeking donations to help fund the trip to the state tournament. Anyone interested should contact Pamela Childress at 333-8540 or pchildress@gocats.org
