Authorities seek escaped inmate

VALDOSTA — The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office is searching for an inmate who escaped last week from a transitional center.

Marvin Smith, 23, was an inmate at the Valdosta Transitional Center on Gil Harbin Industrial Boulevard, and left the facility at approximately 12:08 a.m. on June 12 and did not return. The center reported him missing at 2:25 a.m. Smith had been incarcerated following a motor vehicle theft conviction in Glynn County, reports stated.

Questions to a state Department of Corrections spokesperson about the incident were not returned before press time.

At 7:30 a.m., deputies received the report of a stolen vehicle near the transition center. The vehicle, a gray 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Georgia tag ACU7690 was taken from the 1600 block of Highland Drive. It is unclear if the two incidents are related, reports stated.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Smith, and the sheriff’s office asks anyone who comes in contact with Smith or the stolen vehicle to call (229) 671-2950 or submit a tip online at www.lowndessheriff.com.
