VALDOSTA — A Sunday night wreck on U.S. Highway 84 involved six vehicles and resulted in two deaths, including a good Samaritan tending to an injured driver, according to the Georgia State Patrol Monday.

At approximately 8:24 p.m. Sunday, a white car collided with a semi-truck while traveling eastbound on Highway 84 near James Road in Valdosta. The wreck left both vehicles disabled in the westbound lane, said Sgt. L. Carl Taylor with the Georgia State Patrol.

After the wreck, the driver, Ashokkumar Patel, 69, of Valdosta sustained minor injuries that were being tended to by a nurse who witnessed the accident, said Georgia State Patrol lead investigator Trooper Patrick Orr.

A second collision occurred when vehicles traveling westbound, including another semi-truck, struck the disabled vehicles, according to GSP.

The nurse tending to Patel’s injuries, Martitia “Marty” Jones, 58, of Barwick, died as a result of the second collision at the scene, said Brad Carter, Lowndes County deputy coroner. Patel was transported to South Georgia Medical Center but later died in the emergency room at 11:03 p.m., said Carter.

Jones, a grandmother of four, was a registered nurse with Archbold Medical Center.

At least two others were injured, but the extent of the injuries are unknown as the investigation is still in its early stages, said Taylor.

Charges are pending in the incident, Orr said.
