HOMERVILLE — Investigators have arrested a second man in connection with the Clinch County shooting death of a Morehouse College student.

Dexter Jamal Freeney, 18, was arrested at approximately 6 p.m. Monday after an extensive manhunt involving tracking dogs and a helicopter, said Russell Mansfield, Georgia Bureau of Investigation special agent in charge.

Authorities sought Freeney along with Trevor Denard Posley, 22, for the Saturday shooting death of Clayton “Clay” Rolland Cross, 22, at the 912 Club on Reddick Street. Investigators continued searching Tuesday for Posley.

A third man, Steven Maurice Monroe, 25, was arrested at approximately 10:30 a.m. Monday. Both Freeney and Monroe are charged with felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to reports. Posley is wanted on the same charges, according to the GBI.

Cross was a senior at Morehouse College and the stepson of University of Georgia star Lindsey Scott. He was in Homerville visiting for Mother’s Day weekend and was at the 912 Club Saturday night to inquire about work as a DJ.

Investigators do not believe he was the intended target of the shooting, according to the GBI.

Cross’ murder is the third death at the 912 Club since 2010, according to Investigator Thomas Bisdorf with the Clinch County Sheriff’s Department.
