Moody helicopter makes unscheduled landing in ball field

HAHIRA — No one was injured Tuesday when a Moody Air Force Base helicopter made an unscheduled landing on the Hahira Middle School football field.

At approximately noon Tuesday, the HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter, part of the 41st Rescue Squadron, “executed a

precautionary landing” in the field during a routine maintenance check, according to a statement from Moody Air Force Base.

The pilot made the precautionary landing as a safety

measure. A light indicated a possible mechanical issue with the helicopter, according to Moody.

“In this instance, standard protocol dictates the pilot land the aircraft in a safe location as soon as possible,” according to the Moody AFB statement. “The helicopter safely landed and first responders immediately secured the scene. After evaluation by aircraft maintenance specialists from Moody, the HH-60 took off and returned to the base at approximately 1:50 p.m.”

Though classes are out for summer, the unexpected helicopter landing attracted several residents to Hahira Middle School.
