Nathan Deal visits Valdosta

VALDOSTA — Republican Nathan Deal stopped in Valdosta on Thursday, staying just long enough to answer a few questions and make a brief statement to both the media and his supporters.

Deal faces former Secretary of State Karen Handel in the Aug. 10 Republican primary runoff, both of them hoping to challenge Democrat Roy Barnes in the race for governor.

His stop at Valdosta Flying Service Thursday was part of his campaign tour across the state.

“We’re very optimistic about it (winning),” he said. “We have worked very hard.”

Traveling across Georgia, Deal noted that he has received positive feedback from voters.

“We’ve been very pleased,” he said. “(We’ve) had some good supporters.”

If elected Georgia’s next governor, Deal said that he will tackle many issues concerning the state.

“Unfortunately, the budget is the biggest issue that we have to tackle first,” he said. “(We will be) finding areas to eliminate spending.”

Deal also plans to focus on improving sales tax collections and the public school system, starting by not adding more furlough days or making more cuts in education.

Following a question and answer session, Deal held a meet-and-greet before heading to Adel for a grassroots meeting.

“We are making as many of these outreaches as we can,” he said.
