Canning plant: Preserving a way of life

VALDOSTA — Summertime means fresh vegetable time, which means it’s time for canning. And just in time, the Lowndes County School’s annual Food Processing Center and Canning Plant is open for business and welcoming customers.

Whether you need shelling, blanching, canning, jarring or peach peeling, the processing center offers it. There are facilities available to cook large amounts of soups, jellies, stews, boiled peanuts, etc. It also has an industrial-grade juicer.

“Facilities are available for canning in #401 cans and glass jars,” according to the center. “Cans are furnished by the Food Processing Center and the cost is included in the processing charge. Patrons wishing to can in glass jars must furnish these and a nominal processing fee is charged. Patrons should bring knives, clean cloths, non-iodized salt and other condiments as needed.

“Patrons wishing to can peaches must also bring one gallon of white vinegar and also sugar to make syrup if desired. A medium syrup is recommended and requires two cups of water per one cup of sugar.”

The costs for services are:

Canning: 65 cents per can.

Shelling: $2 per bushel.

Blanching: $2 per bushel.

Shelling and Blanching: $3 per bushel.

Peach Peeling: $2 per bushel.

Jars: 20 cents per jar (Customer provides jars and lids)

The processing center is open 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The center will be open through July 16, but will be closed on July 7 and 9.

The plant is located northwest of Martin Stadium by Interstate 75 at the north end of Lowndes High School’s student parking lot and the south end of the main Lowndes High School building.
