Miss Georgia visits Dasher Memorial Heart Center

VALDOSTA — Miss Georgia visited South Georgia Medical Center Thursday to tour the Dasher Memorial Heart Center.

Miss Georgia Carly Mathis of Leesburg visited the center in observance of National Women’s Health Week. With her platform being heart health, Mathis toured the state-of-the-art facility and met Joe V. Dasher Jr. and his wife, Audrey.

“I’ve dealt with high cholesterol myself so it’s something that affected me personally and then most of my grandparents have been affected by heart disease. So whenever people ask me about my platform, I just knew it was something I needed to promote,” says Mathis.

During her guided tour of the facility, Miss Georgia was taken into one of the high-tech patient rooms. Tom Calabro, a registered nurse and director of critical care, explained how the room functions to give patients the necessary treatments in the most comfortable way.

“These rooms can be configured any way we want,” says Calabro. “We are proud of the space and what we can deliver.”

The rooms’ technological advancements include an ability to control the blinds from the patient’s bed and 24/7 physician access to a patient’s current status via computer.

Along with her tour of the facility, Miss Georgia continued her observation of National Women’s Health Week Thursday evening by acting as the guest speaker at the SGMC celebration of the week at the Drury Inn.
