Animal shelter to reopen today

VALDOSTA — Lowndes County Animal Shelter is scheduled to open today following a week-long self-imposed quarantine.

The quarantine came after a dog that had been adopted from the shelter was found to have distemper. The shelter made the decision to close for a week to test the other animals and sanitize the shelter to ensure that no other animals were infected.

Throughout the quarantine, county officials relied on the advisement of their veterinarian to determine when to reopen. The veterinarian has given the all clear to lift the quarantine, according to the county Tuesday.

During the quarantine, the shelter was neither releasing animals for adoption nor accepting any animals. Today, the shelter will resume its normal operating schedule, with adoptions available from noon-4:30 p.m. today.

The Lowndes County Animal Shelter is located at 337 Gil Harbin Industrial Boulevard.
