Mixed results for Valdosta council seats

VALDOSTA — Most of the results are in, but only two of the three city council districts can be called, district four and district six; district two is headed for a runoff.

The City of Valdosta city council candidates need 50 percent of the vote, plus one, to seal the victory.

Incumbent Alvin Payton, Jr., overtook his opponent, Junior S. Jackson with 68.82 percent to Jackson’s 30.11 percent.

Payton said that his first goal as a councilman is to relocate the Withlacoochee Wastewater Treatment Plant. Payton is also considering reexamining the city's public transportation issue.

“We tried that 2 or 3 years ago, and it was not economically feasible at that time, and it still may not be, but that is something I want to look at,” Payton said.

Valdosta’s city council district six results were close but it looks like incumbent Robert Yost has won a fourth term.

Opponent Richard S. Miller was a

close second, and Joseph Wheeler came

in third. Yost has 51.89 percent, Miller

has 42.2 percent and Wheeler has

5.44 percent.

The Times was unable to reach Yost for a comment.

District two is headed to a run-off election between the top two candidates. Sandra J. Tooley has 47.86 percent of the vote, Calvin Graham, Sr. has 33.96 percent of the vote, and John Hogan trails the two with 17.65% of the vote.

Tooley and Graham will be the

only two candidates in the run-off

The election results will be finalized Friday, Nov. 8 after the provisional ballots are counted.
