Georgia State Patrol officers are investigating the death of a man who was struck by a semi-truck on I-75 in Valdosta around midnight Monday.
At approximately 12 a.m. Monday, the driver of a UPS tractor trailer traveling northbound on I-75 called 911 saying he had struck a pedestrian just north of Exit 18. He reportedly said the man walked into the path of his truck and he could not avoid hitting him. It took emergency responders a few moments to find the location, as the distraught driver tried to explain where he was. When he told them he was by the Withlacoochee River, responders were able to arrive at the scene quickly. Several lanes were shut down on the interstate as GSP and other law enforcement recovered evidence into the early morning hours Tuesday.
According to SFC L. Carl Taylor with Georgia State Patrol, the victim was identified late Tuesday afternoon as Marcus Holmes, a Cairo High School graduate and Valdosta State University student who was living at the Grove student housing apartment complex adjacent to the interstate.
Holmes was reportedly wearing dark athletic clothing with Cairo High School logos. His body was identified by a Cairo High School resource officer.
Blood samples were taken from the driver and the victim for a routine drug and alcohol screening.
The GSP is investigating the accident, and are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to call (229) 333 - 5215.
