Adel bank robbed

Suspect captured after chase on interstate

ADEL — Lowndes County sheriff’s deputies apprehended a man suspected in an Adel bank robbery Thursday following a short interstate chase that had the driver stopping before the getaway vehicle could strike a series of tire-bursting stop sticks.

“He had two deputies behind him and another deputy in front of him with stop sticks pulled across the interstate,” said Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine, “and he just quit before his tires even came to the stop sticks.”

At 11:43 a.m. Thursday, Adel and Cook County law enforcement responded to reports of a bank robbery at the Heritage Bank in Adel. The man was reportedly unarmed when he demanded money from bank personnel then exited the bank on Fourth Street.

Cook authorities issued a Be On the Lookout for a maroon GMC Yukon with a Florida license plate as a potential getaway vehicle for the bank robbery. Two Lowndes County sheriff’s deputies patrolling I-75 were among the law officers receiving the BOLO.

One of these deputies spotted a maroon SUV that matched the getaway vehicle’s description traveling south on I-75, Prine said. He blue-lighted the vehicle but it didn’t stop. The second I-75 Lowndes County sheriff’s deputy joined the pursuit, which lasted for a few miles, the sheriff said.

Approaching the third Lowndes County deputy and the stop sticks near the 11-mile marker, the Yukon’s driver pulled out of the lanes of traffic onto the side of the highway. He was arrested peacefully and taken into custody, Prine said.

Deputies and investigators reportedly found several pieces of evidence tied to the bank robbery inside of the vehicle, Prine said. Authorities are also looking into the possibility of connections to other bank robberies in Florida and Georgia.

Lowndes deputies arrested Donald Edward Mims, 57, of Jacksonville, Fla. He faces charges of robbery, theft by taking and possibly additional charges, according to the sheriff’s office. Mims was taken to the Lowndes County Jail, where Adel Police Department investigators and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents interviewed him Thursday afternoon. He was then transferred to the Cook County Jail.
