VALDOSTA — Authorities are investigating the death of a 17-year-old girl at a Valdosta State University residence hall, but do not believe foul play is involved.

The girl, a student at Valdosta State from Lawrenceville, was found around 12:30 p.m. Sunday in a study room on the fifth floor of Georgia Hall, said Bill Watson, Lowndes County coroner.

Several students had seen her earlier, around midnight, on a couch in the study room and thought she was asleep, he said.

Around 12:30 p.m. Sunday, some people who entered the study room found her and realized she had passed away, Watson said.

“They tried CPR and called university police,” he said.

A call was placed to 911, bringing an ambulance from South Georgia Medical Center, but to no avail, Watson said.

There was no sign of trauma on the girl’s body, he said, adding that he doesn’t believe there was any foul play involved.

Her body has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Macon, and an autopsy has been scheduled for this morning, Watson said.

The girl’s name is being withheld pending notification of her family, he said.
