The Valdosta Lowndes Parks and Recreation Authority changed things a little this year and put judging responsibilities for their house-decorating contest into smaller hands.
“Instead of VLPRA staff being judges, we allowed some children from the community a chance to make the decisions,” said Sarah Pinson, program coordinator.
Six children who submitted original artwork of a holiday scene boarded the authority’s new bus with their parents and guardians and Executive Director George Page to view area houses decorated from top to bottom for the holidays.
“Each child had a clipboard with all of our
house-decorating contestants and space to write what they liked about each house – they had a great time,” said Pinson.
The children took time at each house to discuss what they liked about the decorations and how the houses stacked up against each other. In between houses, the kids shared holiday plans and goody bags with cookies, milk and chocolate.
“We are looking forward to keeping kids involved in this event every year,” said Pinson. “It is a fresh twist on an annual program that our agency puts on and is a great way to share some holiday spirit with kids in our community.”
The contest had three categories: WOW!, Reason for the Season and Humorous. The children chose Bill and Joanne Halter’s home on McRee Drive as the winner in the WOW! category. Mathew Lindsey Jr. on Webb Road in Hahira won top honors in the Humorous category, and Maggie Johnson on Knights Academy Road placed first in the Reason for the Season category.
