VALDOSTA — By reporting suspicious activity, observant neighbors helped police nab a man reportedly entering cars early Thursday morning, according to the Valdosta Police Department Friday.

At approximately 1:05 a.m., Valdosta police responded to The Gates Apartment complex at 1400 Baytree Drive after receiving reports of a suspicious person entering multiple vehicles in the parking lot.

After police arrived at the scene, a suspect was detained after an eye-witness positively identified him as the man going through the vehicles.

Vehicle owners gave police descriptions of items taken, and those items were reportedly found on the suspect: black Ray Ban sunglasses, valued at $130, and gold-rimmed sunglasses, valued at $10.

Johnny Lee Morrison Jr., 29, was arrested and charged with theft by entering auto, police report.

The suspect reportedly had several other items in his possession, including a pair of tennis shoes, valued at $100. Officers checked with other apartment complexes in the area and found a car that had been broken into in the 600 block of Baytree Road. The owner of the vehicle identified the shoes as stolen, and Morrison was charged with another count of theft by entering auto, according to police.

Morrison was taken to the Lowndes County Jail.

The Valdosta Police Department credits the actions of concerned citizens who reported suspicious activity and the quick response of VPD patrol officers Thomas Newton, Trey Gandy and Chris Hicks for the arrest.
