VALDOSTA — Three men arrested for reportedly beating and robbing a Good Samaritan during the summer have been indicted by a grand jury in Lowndes County Superior Court.
Xavier Rashad Brooks, 18, Malachi Isaiah Payne, 18, and Nathan Lydell Murray, 17, have been formally charged on one count of armed robbery, according to indictment papers from the Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office in Valdosta. Brooks is also indicted on two counts of obstruction of an officer.
The three were arrested following an incident that occurred Tuesday, July 28.
Around 4 a.m., three black males approached a 32-year-old Lake Park man at the Taco Bell on North Ashley Street, Valdosta Police Department Cmdr. Brian Childress previously told The Times.
The three men said they were having car problems. The 32-year-old offered to help the three young men, Childress said.
“The victim was helping them, and during the course of helping them, they robbed him,” Childress said. The trio reportedly made the man believe they had a weapon, though he did not see a weapon, police reported. They repeatedly punched and kicked the man while robbing him.
The victim was taken to South Georgia Medical Center, treated and released.
Police issued a BOLO (be on the lookout) for three males in a gold 2001 Chrysler. Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office deputies spotted a matching vehicle and stopped it on Bemiss Road.
The robbed man was transported to Bemiss Road where the car and suspects were stopped. He identified the group as the people who robbed him, Childress said.
During this identification process, Brooks escaped on foot. The other two suspects were taken into custody. Brooks was later apprehended.
Murray was a juve- nile at the time of the robbery.
