VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University’s Head Coach David Dean presented Mayor John Fretti and the City Council with 20 tickets for this weekend’s upcoming playoff game at a council meeting Monday night.

“This is an opportunity to give back to the community for their participation and support of VSU’s football program,” said Dean. The tickets were given to the council to distribute to constituents and youth for free admission to the game set for Nov. 24 at 1 p.m.

Following the special presentation, City Manager Larry Hanson read the official election results for the 2007 general municipal election. The election results were as follows: Incumbent Mayor Fretti with 62.58 percent, incumbent John Eunice for council at-large with 58.38 percent, incumbent James Wright with 62.14 percent, incumbent Joseph “Sonny” Vickers with 98.54 percent and Tim Carroll with 51.71 percent.

Under ordinances and resolutions, the consideration of a request to approve a resolution for Downtown Development Revolving Loan Fund (DDRLF) for 117-119 North Patterson Street (ClientTell, Inc.) was unanimously tabled until the first council meeting in December.

Under local funding and requests, the consideration of bids for half-ton pick-up trucks for various city departments were unanimously approved for Langdale Ford for $89,549.70. Also, the consideration of bids for one F-350 truck with utility body for the Water and Sewer Department was unanimously approved to Langdale Ford for $23,948.27.

Fire Chief J.D. Rice gave a brief presentation over the application for the 2007 Fire Prevention and Safety Grant. The grant is for the purchase of necessary equipment to implement fire prevention and safety programs. The total grant request is for up to $13,000 of which up to $1,300 or 10 percent is the required match. The consideration of a request to apply for grant funds for the 2007 Fire Prevention and Safety Grants Program was unanimously approved.

Brenda Thrasher and Angela Wall were both appointed to the Valdosta Tree Commission. Also, during boards and commissions, the consideration of appointments to the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Advisory Committee was unanimously postponed.

During the Citizens to be Heard portion of the meeting, Southern Christian Leadership Conference Chairman Rev. Floyd Rose addressed the council about radio announcements and campaigns from the Mayor that Rose claimed to be misleading. Mayor Fretti said, “I will not answer these questions — this is government and not for engagement of individual council members for campaign and political issues. This is the wrong venue for these concerns, but we appreciate you being present tonight. Let’s stay focused on government.”

During the City Manager’s report, Hanson discussed the success of the city’s professionals conference, the upcoming Jingle Bell Festival and the waste-water spill. “The Jingle Bell Festival will be held on Dec.1, and has grown and prospered. Please also be sure to attend the official Christmas Tree lighting at 2 p.m. on Nov. 21,” said Hanson. “The incident that

resulted in the spill of 7,000 gallons of wastewater is still under investigation. As a precaution, the public is urged to refrain from fishing, swimming, or wading in Cherry Creek near Skipper Bridge Road for one week,” said Hanson.
