Funds awarded for road projects

By Malynda Fulton

VALDOSTA — Lowndes County has been awarded more than $700,000 in stimulus funds for road resurfacing projects.

The county was awarded $456,500 for the resurfacing of 4.16 miles on Morven Road from State Route 122 to the Brooks County Line. The county also received $246,400 to resurface 1.96 miles on Howell Road from County Road 1274 in Statenville to State Route 7 on Perimeter Road.

The money is part of $65.8 million in stimulus funds that the state recently certified for transportation projects.

“These projects will bring safety improvements and needed maintenance and support to roads, intersections and bridges around Georgia,” said Gov. Sonny Perdue, according to a press release from his office. “The federal funds will make our roads safe and strengthen our transportation network.”

Other area counties that received funds include Berrien and Cook counties, the release stated. Berrien County received $660,000 for resurfacing and maintenance of Wycliff Roberts Road. Cook County received $229,900 for the resurfacing and maintenance of Massee Post Road.

Lowndes County also recently received $51,500 stimulus funds to purchase new mobile data computers, a video security system and wireless dispatcher headsets for its transit system. This is the second round of stimulus money provided for the transit system; the county received $68,600 for the system in June.
