Sunday Showtimes

By Dean Poling

VALDOSTA — A local children’s theatre and a Valdosta business are planning Sunday afternoon entertainment for children.

This weekend, Little Actors Theatre and Fox’s Pizza kick off Showtime, a series of monologues presented by young local performers, says Diane Tovar, LAT director.

“This is a series of monologues,” Tovar says. “Each actor chose a series they wanted to perform from one to three each. They have come up with costumes and props for themselves. This has given them the opportunity to prepare, from start to finish, their own version of the monologue. Very creative participants.”

Organizers were looking for something for youngsters on weekend afternoons, and the idea of a children’s show by kids for kids seemed to fit the bill, said Harriet Messcher, a Showtime organizer.

Tovar credited the idea for the event to Connie Presser of Fox’s Pizza, who contacted Messcher, who then contacted LAT. Tovar sees Showtime as a way to introduce LAT to new viewers.

For the past few years, Little Actors Theatre has presented children’s shows featuring young actors. LAT usually presents two to three full shows per year, along with other activities, including the annual summer visit of the traveling professional Missoula Theatre troupe.

Two Showtime performances have been scheduled, one for this weekend and one for next weekend. Additional performances may be scheduled depending on the success of the first two Showtime events, Tovar says.

The first shows feature youngsters from Valdosta, Hahira, Nashville and Quitman. Student director MaryLee Pendleton is preparing these shows.

Cast: Savannah Bell, Haley Outlaw, Victoria Warrick, Emory Warrick III, Caitlyn Riesinger, Will Marcrum, Morgan Outlaw and Megan Wade.
