Abene to lead Val Tech

— VALDOSTA — Valdosta Technical College has announced Dr. Robert M. “Bob” Abene as the college’s upcoming president.
“Bob Abene impressed me with his wealth of experience in the field of higher education, his track record of fund-raising accomplishments, and his belief that a college should always be student-centered and committed to their success,” said Mike Vollmer, commissioner of the Department of Technical and Adult Education. “He’s a proven leader with an energetic personality who understands the vital role that Valdosta Tech serves in state and local workforce development. He’s a perfect fit for this great college.”
When long-time Val Tech President James Bridges retired about four months ago, a 10-member presidential search committee was chosen to screen candidates to fill the position. As months closed, the committee narrowed its search down to three candidates, who were referred to the Department of Technical and Adult Education. Vollmer interviewed the finalists in Atlanta and made his recommendation.
“I’m very appreciative to the committee chair, Sandy Sanders, and the entire committee for their time and effort. They did an outstanding job in helping us through the search process,” said Vollmer.
Abene has been involved in the field of higher education for more than 30 years, beginning as a psychology instructor in 1975 and moving into administrative duties as years progressed. He has served as president of Ancilla College and Marian College, both in Indiana; vice president of Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee; and dean of students and dean of student development at two separate colleges in Illinois. He is currently an education consultant to several Indiana workforce development boards.
As news came of the DTAE’s decision Thursday afternoon, Vice President E.J. Harris stood outside the construction site of Val Tech’s new building. Watching as bulldozers unearthed trees and cleared the way for the facility’s foundation, Harris believes the project is symbolic of the new ideas Abene will bring to Val Tech when he arrives.
“There will definitely be a lot of good things going on when Dr. Abene gets here, and the entire staff is excited about his arrival,” said Harris.
Moultrie Technical College’s president, Dr. Tina Anderson, will continue to serve as Val Tech’s interim president until Abene arrives on Dec. 1.
“It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Tina Anderson. She is a great educator and visionary, and she has a real passion for what we do in technical education,” said Harris. “She brought many things to the table, and I’m sure she’s learned some things too. We are so thankful for the fresh perspectives she offered during her time here.”
