Valdosta State University will welcome enhake — an emerging classical ensemble comprised of four members from South Korea and United States — to Whitehead Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Drawing its name from the Seminole (Creek) word for sound or call, enhake features Wonkak Kim on clarinet, Jayoung Kim on violoncello, Eun-Hee Park on piano, and M. Brent Williams on violin or viola. Williams teaches violin and world music at Valdosta State University.

Enhake’s unique instrumentation (clarinet-violin-cello-piano) allows the group to present some of the most important music from the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as a vast repertoire of chamber masterworks of the Classical and Romantic eras in various trio combinations.

Since its inception in 2007 at Florida State University, enhake has established itself by performing and participating in some of the most prestigious competitions throughout the United States.

In 2008 enhake was awarded first prize at the third International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition in Boston, Mass., and a Judges’ Special Recognition Prize at the Plowman Chamber Music Competition in Columbia, Mo. The same year, enhake made its Carnegie Hall debut featuring John Mackey’s Breakdown Tango to critical acclaim at Weill Recital Hall.

The group is also a recipient of the University Musical Association Award and Academic Conference Grants at FSU for the 2007-09 Season.

Enhake was featured in the 2008 OK Mozart International Festival in Bartlesville, Okla., as a part of its Showcase Series in addition to guest artist performances at the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma City University.

Enhake has captured the interest of numerous composers by its distinct voice and dynamic stage presence. As a strong advocate of new music, the group will begin its commission projects during upcoming seasons.

Enhake also frequently collaborates with singers, other instrumentalists and choreographers to explore various aspects of chamber music.

Friday, enhake will perform Trio in E-flat major “Kegelstatt” by W. A. Mozart; Breakdown Tango by John Mackey; Suite pour violon, clarinette et piano, op. 157b by Darius Milhaud; and Quartet for piano, clarinet, violin & cello, op. 1 by Walter Rabl.
