Choral Guild seeks new members
By Dean Poling
VALDOSTA — The Valdosta Choral Guild begins rehearsals next week for its fall concert, and it hopes to hear longtime members’ voices as well as new voices.
The Guild has a guest director this season in Paul Neal, Valdosta State University’s director of choral studies and assistant conductor with the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra, says Guild member Judy Folsom. He conducted the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra in last season’s “Choral Classics” concert.
With the Valdosta Choral Guild, Neal is expected to lead local singers in “Personent Hodie” by Lara Hoggard with brass, “Jubilate” by Bob Chilcott with brass and organ, and “Gloria” by Randall Bass with brass. “We did this previously in concert a few years ago,” Folsom notes. “The second half consists of well-known favorites, some with different arrangements and some familiar arrangements.”
The Choral Guild is a true community chorus. While many members have participated in the Guild for years, the group regularly has new participants for its annual Christmas and spring concerts. The Guild was formed in the 1970s.
Valdosta Choral Guild rehearsals begin at 7:30-9 p.m. Monday, First Baptist Church choir room, 200 W. Central Ave. The fall concert is usually held in the early weeks of December.
