Guyton Otis Terry Jr.
Lt. Colonel Guyton Otis Terry, Jr. US Army (Ret) 73, of Martinez, Ga. formerly of Albany, Ga., died Aug. 19, 2008, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Lt. Colonel Terry’s funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, at the chapel of Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. Chip Gresham will officiate. Interment will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery with full military honors.
Lt. Colonel Terry was an Albany native, the first child born to Guyton Otis Terry, and Marion Turner Terry. Mr. Terry was a member of the Albany High School Class of 1953 and was a member of Central Baptist Church. Following his graduation, Mr. Terry attended the University of Georgia; obtaining a Bachelors of Arts degree in English in 1957. While an undergraduate student, Mr. Terry was initiated a brother into Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
Upon graduation, Mr. Terry received a commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force; serving the Air Force for 12 years as a flying officer, navigator, and missile launch operator. Mr. Terry was a decorated serviceman, receiving numerous awards, among those, the National Defense Service Medal; Master Missileman Badge; Joint Service Commendation Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal.
In 1969, Mr. Terry enrolled in the Juris Doctor program at the University of Wyoming. He received his law degree in 1972. Upon graduation, Mr. Terry entered the United States Army as an attorney at law; becoming a member of the Staff Judge Advocate Corps. Mr. Terry retired from military service in his home state in 1981 with the rank of lieutenant colonel at Fort Gordon, Ga.
Lt. Colonel Terry continued his professional career with the U.S. Treasury Department as an estate and gift tax attorney. Lt. Colonel Terry has resided in Martinez, Ga., for the past 32 years.
Survivors include a son, Guyton O. Terry III and his wife, Gail, of Valdosta, Ga.; a daughter, Tara Elizabeth Gosneigh and her husband, Michael of Martinez, Ga.; a brother, James Turner Terry and a sister, Louise Terry Gresham and her husband, Jerry, all of Albany, Ga.; two nephews, Rev. Chip Gresham of Albany, Ga. and Jacob Cameron Terry III of Atlanta, Ga.; two grandchildren, Emma Caroline Terry of Anna Maria, Fla. and Connor Williams of Martinez, Ga.; and two step-grandchildren, Sara Maslowski of Douglas, Ga. and Emily McMichael of Valdosta.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. this evening at Mathews Funeral Home. Subsequent to the interment ceremony, the family will gather at the residence of Jerry and Louise Gresham, 3207 Lancaster Lane, Albany, Ga., 31721.
