NASHVILLE — A man was arrested on several drug charges after Berrien County authorities discovered him fleeing from a meth lab.

On Thursday, July 30 at approximately 10:01 p.m., a Berrien County Sheriff’s narcotics investigator was conducting surveillance on an area near Enigma Highway, according to a press release from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office. The Investigator had been working on this case for several months and suspected a meth lab was being operated in the area.

During the surveillance, the investigator witnessed a male subject and a female subject running out of the targeted mobile home from a rear door. The subjects entered a green Ford Explorer.

The investigator gave several verbal commands for the subjects to stop and refrain from entering the vehicle. However, the subjects entered the vehicle and the driver began to drive toward the investigator, the release stated. As the vehicle traveled towards the investigator, the investigator fired one round at the driver in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The driver was shot once above the left hip, said Berrien County Sheriff Anthony Heath.

The investigator secured the driver and passenger and immediately called Berrien emergency medical services to render aid to the suspect. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was immediately notified to investigate the case, which is protocol for the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver was identified as Timothy Clanton, 48. Clanton was treated and released at Tift County Hospital. He was then taken into custody at Berrien County Jail and charged with aggravated assault, possession of substance for manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possession of substance with intent to manufacture Schedule 1 or Schedule 2 narcotics.

The female subject was questioned by the GBI after she and Clanton were secured.

She has not been charged at this time. Nonetheless, Heath said that the investigation remains ongoing and he expects several additional arrests to be made.
