Pets With A Purpose
Event raises awareness about Humane Society
By Kari L. Sands
VALDOSTA — The first Pets With A Purpose event, hosted by The Humane Society and sponsored by the Parenting in Valdosta Playgroup, was held Saturday in Drexel Park. Brandi Cason, organizer of the playgroup, said that for a first-time event, everything went well.
“This is the first year we’ve had this event,” said Cason, “Next year we will look at holding the event in September or early in the morning. We held this event to promote animal, specifically, dog awareness about the Humane Society. We also wanted to educate the children about dogs and have them socialize with the different dogs.”
The community had an opportunity to meet 25 different dogs, including an Akita, and their owners at Drexel Park as the dogs were displayed in the per parade. Cason’s very own Corgi mix and chihuahua participated in the pet parade.
There were three competitions including best costume, cutest costume , and the owner/dog look-alike contest, which was won by Heather King and her dog.
“For a first time event, the turnout was very good, and the event was highly successful,” said Cason.
During the event, Shake-N-Howdy provided the participants, or rather their owners, with refreshments from its concession stand. Office Depot and Office Max also donated flyers to help make the event a success.
“For anyone that would like to learn more or participate, its free to join Parenting and Valdosta Play Group,” said Cason. The Parenting in Valdosta Playgroup can be contacted at www.sahp.meetup.com/123.
