Votes now official

By Kelli Hernandez

VALDOSTA — Votes from Tuesday’s Primary Election were certified Friday by the Lowndes County Board of Elections after all provisional and absentee ballots were counted and the results anticipated after election night held true.

Democratic candidates Chris Prine and J.D. Yeager will meet again Aug. 5 for a runoff election in the Lowndes County sheriff race. Prine garnered 40.88 percent of the vote to Yeager’s 37.27 percent. Challenger Roy Hart collected 21.85 percent of the 7,351 total votes counted. The winner of the runoff will face Republican candidate Freddie Taylor in the General Election Nov. 4.

The runoff election will determine who will be the next District 1 County Commissioner between incumbent Edgar Roberts and candidate Joyce Evans. Roberts leads Evans going into the runoff having earned 39.43 percent of the vote to Evans’ 34.98 percent. Challenger Dexter Sharper was knocked out of the race after earning only 25.59 percent of the 2,067 total votes counted for the seat.

Republican candidate for District 1, James Warren was still listed as a candidate on the ballot Tuesday, even after he dropped out of the race only because there was not enough time before the election to remove his name, according to Election Supervisor Deb Cox.

Incumbents saw victory in the races for Lowndes County tax assessors though none of the races will be decided until November.

For Post 2, incumbent Doyle Kelly earned 52.98 percent of the total 6,523 votes to challenger Allan Dear’s 47.02 percent. Kelly will face Republican Steve Davis during the General Election. Total votes counted for the post tallied 6,523.

Incumbent W.G. Walker came away on top for the race for Post 3 with 50.60 percent of the votes to Mike Hill’s 49.40 percent of the 6,870 total votes counted. Walker will fight to retain his position against Republican candidate Ronald Miller.

Republican candidates John Johnson Sr. and David DeMersseman battled for Post 1 with DeMersseman coming out on top with 55.60 percent of the 1,428 total votes to Johnson’s 44.40 percent. DeMersseman will face Democratic candidate, incumbent Earl Wetherington in November.

The sheriff’s race in Lanier County, which was separated by only 26 votes after three provisional ballots were counted, ended with incumbent Nick Norton being elected to another term.

Though no official word has been given on whether a recount will be conducted, Election Supervisor Judy Mullis stated that challenger Darrell Watson has two days to file that request.
