VALDOSTA — As it did for TitleTown, Valdosta-Lowndes County continues putting rivalries aside to welcome the Drum Corps International and Teal Sound Drum & Bugle Corps Sounds of the South Friday.

This drum corps-style band event marks the first time that the Lowndes High Georgia Bridgemen, the Valdosta High Marchin’ Cats and the Valdosta State University Blazin’ Brigade have worked together for a community event, says Joy Schunhoff, a Lowndes High band booster and event organizer.

Jacksonville’s Teal Sound is considered “Florida’s Premier DCI Touring Drum & Bugle Corps.”

“The corps is made up of 135 of the top talented high school and college music students from all over the southeastern U.S.,” according to the Teal Sound Web site. “Each year, we audition more than 200 prospective students from the ages of 15-21 for a chance to participate with the Teal Sound as we tour across the United States competing against other drum & bugle corps. These students come to us as dedicated musicians that want to excel at the visual marching arts.”

On Friday, Teal Sound is scheduled to practice at 10 a.m. and conduct a 3:30 p.m. workshop with participating area band students that afternoon.

Meanwhile, throughout the day, additional drum & bugle corps will arrive. These groups include Blue Stars, LaCrosse, Wis.; Boston Crusaders, Boston, Mass.; Capital Sound, Madison, Wis.; Carolina Crown, Fort Mill, S.C.; Colts, Dubuque, Iowa; Spirit, Jacksonville, Ala.

All of these groups will stay in the Valdosta-Lowndes County area, and will likely bring their fans with them.

At 7:30 p.m. Friday, these groups and Teal Sound will meet to compete in Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. For viewers, this should be an amazing show of exacting performances both for the ear and eye.

It also serves as a fund-raiser for all three area bands, organizers say.
