County reviews proposed updates to Land Development Code

The Lowndes County Board of Commissioners reviewed proposed updates to the Unified Land Development Code during the work session Monday morning.

A hot topic discussed pertaining to the potential for code updates was animal control. The code currently states that keeping animals is considered a kennel when there are six or more domestic pets, not including fish, reptiles or birds.

Mechelle Sullivan, foster adoption coordinator for the Humane Society, and Selina Dunworth, director of Lake Park Animal Rescue, addressed Commissioners Monday requesting consideration for altering the current animal limit laws. Sullivan stated that the current laws are unfair to responsible pet owners and ineffective at deterring irresponsible owners. Sullivan provided Commissioners one possible option — the creation of a Multiple Animal Permit, which would be specifically granted to licensed animal rescues.

Chairman Rod Casey stated that the Commissioners would need at least one month to meet with the Planning Board and to gather all of the necessary information before the issue is revisited for any official action.

For complete coverage of the meeting, see Tuesday's edition of The Valdosta Daily Times.
