VALDOSTA — Individuals with developmental disabilities celebrated a magical night “Under the Sea” during the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority’s second annual developmental disabilities prom at Mathis Auditorium Saturday.

Across the room, the ladies could be seen in flowing gowns and sparkling pumps escorted by their dates who wore three-piece suits and tuxedos. Approximately 250 to 300 people from various parts of South Georgia attended the formal event and danced the night away.

Attendees circled the floor to classic dance tunes such as “The Electric Slide” by Marcia Griffiths and “Set It Off” by Strafe, as well as popular dance hits from Michael Jackson like “Rock With You.”

“This year, we have attendees from Valdosta and Lowndes County as well as Nashville, Quitman, Moultrie and surrounding cities,” said Parks and Recreation Therapeutics Supervisor Tammy Crosby. “We decided to host this event again this year because last year’s event was so successful. This year’s event seems even bigger and better.”

In accordance with the night’s theme, the dance room walls were decorated with coral colors and images of animals from the sea. The background for the prom photos gave the illusion that guests were standing in front of a clear blue ocean. Pictures were done by Wes Sewell Photography.

In addition, guests also got to take turns riding around the city in a limousine.

“Some of our clients may not have gotten to go to the prom when they were in school,” Crosby said. “This event is just an opportunity for our clients dress up, attend the prom and enjoy themselves.”

Refreshments and drinks were also served during the prom.

The prom last from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission for the event was $7.

The prom was coordinated by the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Therapeutics Division. The therapeutics division is specifically designed to serve the mentally and physically challenged members of the community. The therapeutics division provides recreational, social and leisure programs.
