Firemen host fun fund-raiser
By Matt Flumerfelt
VALDOSTA — Firefighters with the Westside and Remerton fire departments will host a summer fun fund-raiser to support cancer research.
The public is invited to join them from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, at Remerton Square on Baytree Road for a day of fun and to help raise money to fund the fight against cancer and also to help a few local cancer patients.
Fund-raiser highlights include fire trucks and equipment, bounce houses, a dunking booth, fire hose games for kids and adults, Sparky the Fire Dog, photo opportunities, food and drinks and much more.
There will be a raffle featuring bicycles donated by Wal-Mart and an LCD TV donated by Premier Rent to Own.
Chik-fil-A, Firehouse Subs, Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches and Pizza Quick are some of the participating vendors.
Proceeds from the event will be split between the American Cancer Society and Partnership Cancer Fund, said Steven Schreck, a Remerton firefighter and event organizer.
The family friendly event honors Mike Patterson, and all funds will be donated in his name, Schreck said.
A former battalion chief at Lowndes County Fire/Rescue’s Westside station, Patterson lost his battle with cancer last November.
Schreck said that Patterson was highly regarded by those who knew and worked with him.
