County to proceed with jail expansion

Lowndes County commissioners handled several matters Tuesday evening during regular session.
Phase II of the Lowndes County Jail expansion project was approved 2-1, with Commissioner Edgar Roberts providing the dissenting vote.
The special tax district for Northlake Subdivision Section IX located on North Valdosta Road was unanimously approved.
In the request to abandon a portion of Indian Ford Road, a study concluded that the section of the county road system has ceased to be used by the public to the extent that no substantial public purpose is served by it.
Two bridges will be replaced on Skipper Bridge Road after being unanimously approved to Southern Concrete for $372,987.36, including the demolition of the two existing bridges, installation of the new bridges, and asphalt and paving between the new bridges. The construction will begin on June 1 and is slated for completion on Aug. 1.

— Alltel Air Cards for Mobile Data Terminals; unanimously approved.
— Contract between Lowndes County and Lake Bowden LLC for Paving of Peat Moss Road; unanimously approved.
— Resolution accepting infrastructure for Miller Farms Subdivision; unanimously approved.
— Beer License: Mary Wardle for Mad Dogs located at 4030A Bemiss Road, Valdosta; unanimously approved.

Bids
— Patching Truck for Public Works; unanimously approved to Beck Motors for $167,890.
— Fuel Truck for Public Works; unanimously approved to Beck Motors for $107,992.
— Peat Moss Paving; unanimously approved to Reames & Son Construction for $173,808.
— Stop and Go Traffic Signal Installation at Val Tech Road and Shiloh Road; unanimously approved to Corbett Electrical Construction for $90,543.

Due to the Memorial Day Holiday on May 26, Lowndes County Board of Commissioners will hold its work session meeting, 8 a.m. Friday, May 23, at 325 W. Savannah Ave.
