Theatre Guild going to ‘Graceland’
By Dean Poling
VALDOSTA — Paul Simon wrote a great song called “Graceland” about pilgrims traveling to that American mecca which is the home of the late Elvis Presley. While millions have visited Graceland through the years, someone had to be the first person to enter those doors as a tourist.
Playwright Ellen Byron’s play imagines that first visit with the comedy “Graceland,” which is described as “a hilarious story of two Southern ladies, who are die-hard Elvis fans, bickering over which of them will be the first ever through the gates of Graceland,” according to Theatre Guild Valdosta, which is presenting the show for two performances as part of Downtown Valdosta’s Art After Dark this Friday.
Theatre Guild presented this show several years ago as part of an evening of one-act plays. Guild regular Linda Stikkel directs the show which stars the mother-daughter team of Jodi Leonard and Jillian Leonard as the unrelated Graceland rivals Rootie and Bev. Both of the Leonards have performed in area plays and they have enjoyed working together on “Graceland.”
Theatre Guild also sponsors the children’s play, “Bigger Than Life,” for one show only, noon Saturday, Veggie Tales indoor stage, Wild Adventures.
