CTI students attend state conference



Twelve students represented Lowndes High at the CTI State Conference at Jekyll Island on April 24-26. The purpose of this conference is to award students who show improvement in career technology and work adjustment skills and to recognize achievements of these students in their career technology educational programs.

Activities included entertainment, leadership skills, educational seminars, competitive events and award ceremonies. The Georgia Department of Education, area businesses, civic organizations, Georgia Department of Human Resources, and public officials sponsor the conference each year.

Lowndes High CTI Chapter competed in the outstanding program of the year competition. The competition is a comprehensive review of the program's activities for the current year. The evaluation criteria included twelve areas: publicity; school projects; work experiences; youth chapter activities; community projects; state conference preparation; individual student achievements; a local appreciation function; public appearances by CTI students or staff; fall leadership conference participation; recreational activities and field trips. Lowndes High School scored 246 points out of a possible 250. The school received a superior rating and the first place award for Outstanding Program in the state for 2008. The Lowndes High Chapter was also recognized as the top school in region 5 for the State Wide Campaign project.

Individual winners from Lowndes High were: Brian Whitmer, first place in Nutrition and Wellness; Letras Tyson, second place in Agricultural Science; Lauren Chaney, second place in Healthcare Science; Donna Wilden, second place in Interior Design; David Bentz, second place in Job Interview; Dominic Burks, second place in Natural Resources; Laura Rountree, third place in Floriculture; and Ericka Betts, third place in the Most Improved Female competition. Ericka Betts was also the third place winner for the Outstanding CTI Senior Scholarship. She received $250.00 Other students attending were Kayla Butts, Ed McDougle, Melissa Metts, and Natayea Whitfield. The group was chaperoned by Sharon Hayes, Lynn Hall, Michael Warren, and Pam Griner.
