ATLANTA – State Representative Amy Carter (D-Valdosta) has announced she will run for re-election to state House District 175, which includes Lowndes County, primarily the city of Valdosta.
“It has been the greatest honor to represent House District 175 in the Georgia House of Representatives. I am always humbled by the trust the citizens have given me,” said Carter. “I want to continue to make sure the concerns of all our community are heard at the state Capitol.
“I have been working to increase the amount of teacher training offered by Georgia’s universities and will continue to work to improve Georgia’s public education system. Although I am pleased with the success of my first term there is more to be accomplished. I pledge to listen to the citizens of my district and represent their views at the state Capitol,” said Carter. “I am excited to be home and ready to start my re-election campaign.
“Outside of elective office I am the Diversified Cooperative Training Coordinator for Lowndes High School. Through a partnership with local businesses, I prepare students for the challenges they will face in the real world. Before working with high school students, I was a business and office technology instructor at Valdosta Technical College,” said Carter. “I know what positive impact small businesses can have on our economy which is why I will always be their champion at the State Capitol. They are a vital part of our economy.”
This session Carter sponsored HB 1300 and HR 1059. Under HB 1300, local school boards have the discretion to require students to make up a maximum of four days, which have been canceled due to a disaster, act of God, and other occurrences. After passing unanimously in both the House and Senate, HB 1300 is awaiting signature by the Governor. HR 1059 urges the Board of Regents to include more instruction in classroom management in the required teacher curriculum for teacher education programs.
Rep. Carter is a member of the Education, Higher Education, Children and Youth, and Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight Committees.
