Brian Sirmans, a teacher and youth advocate in Lanier County has announced his candidacy for the District 4 seat on the Lanier County Commission for the July 15 primary.

Sirmans is no stranger to politics. After serving on the staff of former U.S. Sen. Zell Miller in 2002, Sirmans returned to Lakeland to attend Valdosta State University and major in History. Sirmans has taught for the last three years at Coffee High School in Douglas, commuting to work while still serving his local community in many different roles.

Sirmans was chosen the 2008 Georgia Teacher of the Year by the Veterans of Foreign Wars for his work and dedication to promoting patriotism and democracy within his classroom.

“My main goal as the next District 4 Commissioner is to be an advocate for the people of my district and the people of Lanier County,” stated Sirmans. “I am so very proud of Lakeland and Lanier County and I want an opportunity to give back to this great community the way it has so unselfishly given to me over the last few years.”

Sirmans is hoping to unseat incumbent Ronnie Bennett who is also seeking reelection to the post.

“I admire Mr. Bennett for his hard work and dedication to this community and I do not view myself as running against Mr. Bennett, but running for the District 4 seat.”

Sirmans is currently serving as the Youth Director of the Lakeland Church of God and will be teaching Social Studies at Lanier County High School this fall.

“I am committed to serving the citizens of Stockton, Mudcreek, and Lakeland to help improve upon our quality of life and to make sure our community is ready to meet the growing economic and social challenges of the future.”

Sirmans received his master’s degree in 2006 from Troy State University and lives in Lanier County with his wife Crystal and their son Joshua. The Lanier County Democratic Primary will be held July 15.
