Lowndes County and the state of Georgia reached an agreement on the purchase of the old Department of Labor Building at 2808 N. Oak St.

The Lowndes County Board of Commissioners’ unanimous approval of the contract during Tuesday night’s meeting finalized the transaction. With the purchase of the property for $875,000, the county will use it for the Board of Elections Office.

During the public hearings portion of the meeting, Commissioners considered the following rezoning cases:

l Voted 2-1 to approve rezoning four acres at 3020 Hwy. 41 S. from E-A and C-H to M-2, with Commissioner Richard Lee voting against. Owner Terry Dees wants to rezone the split commercial/agriculture zoned property for a transfer/sorter site, where inert materials from construction sites are brought before being recycled or sold. Commissioners stipulated that Dees must come up with a plan for buffering the property.

• Unanimously approved rezoning 74 acres at Union Road Subdivision from E-A and R-21 to P-D and E-A, with six conditions placed on the property. A revised site plan features 149 lots instead of the 169 lots originally proposed.

• Unanimously approved the rezoning of three acres at 3425 Mable Road from R-A to R-1. The case represented an attempt by the applicant to rezone a wooded piece of property with an existing single-family residence for an additional two single-family residence.

• Unanimously approved the rezoning of 11.6 acres at 4253 Johnston Road from E-A to R-1. The case represented an attempt by the applicant to rezone a wooded piece of property with an existing single-family residence for an additional three single-family residences.

• Unanimously approved the rezoning of 40 acres on Old Clyattville Road from C-H to M-1. The rezoning paves the way for turning the undeveloped and partially wooded piece of property into the site of an industrial plant. Brad Lofton, executive director of the Valdosta-Lowndes County Industrial Authority, said the company locating to the site will be a great asset to Lowndes County.

• Unanimously approved granting a relief for .63 acres at 4600 N. Valdosta Road from the Unified Land Development Code side-yard setback standards and landscaping requirements through a vested rights application. Waffle House Inc. intends to build a restaurant on the property.

In other business, Commissioners:

• Unanimously approved the abandonment of Bridges Road and a portion of Peat Moss Road.

• Unanimously approved a beer and wine license for the Thai Orchard Restaurant, 5913 Bemiss Road. The new owner is Tongphon Kulp.

• Unanimously approved the low bid of $67,992 from Yancey for a rubber tire front end loader for the County Road Maintenance Division.

The next meeting of the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners is at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, at the County Administration Building, 325 W. Savannah Ave.
