Valdosta officials warning of water test scam

VALDOSTA — A number of citizens have received calls recently in reference to water quality testing where personal information is attempted to be obtained. Citizens are being advised to disregard the calls because the survey is a scam. The following information was released in a statement from the city of Valdosta:

Some citizens of Valdosta may have received home visits recently by representatives of a company who, after trying to retrieve their personal information, also ask permission to “test” their water. Since the city of Valdosta already tests the water throughout the city each month and has never had a water-quality violation, there is no need for any citizen to agree to contract with such a company.

“We are proud to provide our citizens with the high quality water that is tested regularly to meet all requirements,” said Utilities Director Leon Weeks. “The trace chemicals found in drinking water are within the limits. The city of Valdosta’s drinking water does not need additional treatment to meet the regulations.”

In the event that city water does not meet water quality requirements set by EPA and the state — which is not the case — the city would be required to notify the public of such a violation via various mechanisms in accordance with the requirement of Safe Drinking Water Act. Even in such cases, no legitimate company would need to retrieve personal information from citizens.

Citizens may also view the city’s most recent Water Quality Report at www.valdostacity.com. For more information, citizens may also call the Utilities Department at (229) 259-3592.
