VALDOSTA — Zombies started lining up about an hour prior to audition time Wednesday afternoon for the movie “Zombieland.”

OK, it was actually local and area people wanting to be zombies, or rather play zombies, in a comedy-horror movie tentatively scheduled to start shooting in February at Wild Adventures.

The casting call attracted adults of all ages, with crowd estimates in the hundreds, as people did their best to shuffle, moan, walk stiff-legged, and perform other basic zombie tasks for the casting director. All lured by the possibility of being a star, making a little money, and getting a free meal or two if chosen to be a zombie during filming.

Patrick Ingram, Extras Casting director, will choose his zombies from the auditions and call the local performers to be zombified for the movie.

Principal shooting is reportedly scheduled for Atlanta and Valdosta, with Lowndes County being chosen because of Wild Adventures, Ingram said.

The Internet Movie Database (imbd.com) provides a “Zombieland” synopsis: “In a world overrun by zombies, a guy described as ‘the most frightened person on Earth’ looks to find refuge for a band of people to safety.”

Internet traffic on the movie also mentions “an old funeral home that is turned into a morbid attraction called Zombieland.”

“Zombieland” is described as a comedy-horror movie, even a “buddy picture,” about a “mismatched pair of survivors who find friendship and redemption in a world overrun by zombies,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. The movie will reportedly be released in either late 2009 or in 2010.

Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg are slated to star in the movie. Eisenberg, who starred in “The Squid and the Whale,” will reportedly play “Flagstaff, a terrified shut-in whose cowardice makes him an expert at surviving the zombies but who is forced out of his shell to join the band of survivors, which includes Harrelson,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Ruben Fleischer has been tapped to direct. The screenplay was written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese.

Columbia Pictures and Sony have also been linked to the film.
