LANIER COUNTY — A Lanier County man arrested over the weekend following a high-speed chase has been denied bond.

A second suspect remains at large.

While en route to Stockton on a call for assistance at around 6 p.m. Saturday, Lanier County Sheriff Nick Norton, accompanied by Chief Deputy Pope Howell, said he noticed a Lincoln pickup truck traveling east on U.S. 84 at a high rate of speed.

The speed of the truck was clocked at 97 miles per hour in a 55-mile-per-hour zone, Norton said.

Norton said that he followed the vehicle through Stockton. Upon noticing the blue emergency lights on Norton’s truck, the Lincoln truck abruptly traveled from the passing lane into the traveling lane, then on to the right-of-way shoulder, Norton said.

The vehicle came to a stop in a nose-down position between U.S. 84 and some train tracks, which caused damage to the front end of the truck.

Norton said that two

occupants jumped from the vehicle and ran south across the train tracks into a heavily wooded area. The driver of the Lincoln truck, Fredrick Tyrone Calhoun, was apprehended.

Authorities were unable to catch the second suspect, Norton said.

Inside Calhoun’s vehicle, authorities found two baggies of crack cocaine in an arm rest cup holder, a .50 caliber pistol and some cash, Norton said. The truck was inventoried and impounded.

Norton said a total of 25 grams of crack cocaine, with an approximate value of $2,200, the pistol and nearly $6,000 in cash were seized during the incident.

Calhoun has been charged with obstruction, attempt to elude law enforcement and cocaine possession, according to reports. Several other charges are pending. The second suspect is being sought and faces similar charges.

Norton noted that the Lanier County Magistrate Court Judge denied Calhoun’s request for bond late Monday afternoon.

The latest charges come almost three years after Calhoun was charged with trafficking cocaine after a drug bust led authorities to seize approximately $223,000 in suspected drug money, one kilogram of cocaine, financial records and weapons. Norton said that Calhoun is on bond awaiting trial for that charge.
