Police car in accident

A Valdosta Police Department car and a private vehicle were involved in a wreck late Friday on Bemiss Road, according to authorities. According to Valdosta Police Department Commander Brian Childress, the initial investigation has the police officer driving to work from his home in the county, traveling south on Bemiss Road, when the driver of a silver Mazda B2300, a 17-year-old-male who was traveling north on Bemiss Road, attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Skipper Bridge Road, failing to yield the right of way. The Georgia State Patrol is heading the investigation at the request of the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office as well as the police department, Childress said. A female passenger of the Mazda truck was taken to South Georgia Medical Center with unknown injuries, Childress said. The officer was taken to SGMC complaining of neck and back pain; according to Childress, the office does not have “life-threatening nor carrier-ending injuries.’ As is standard procedure for a police officer involved in an accident, the officer will be screened for drug usage, according to Childress. -- Photos by Pat Gallager / The Valdosta Daily Times
