Theatre Guild hosts auditions for ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’

VALDOSTA — Theatre Guild Valdosta prepares to bring one of the 20th century’s greatest novels to the Dosta Playhouse stage later this year, but it must first find area people to play Atticus Finch, Scout, Jem and Boo Radley.

This evening and Tuesday, Theate Guild hosts auditions for playwright Christopher Sergel’s dramatization of Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

Directed by Patti Cook, the Valdosta show needs a cast of 11 males, six females and extras. It needs adults and youths to play the roles.

Theatre Guild has issued a caution to parents bringing their children to audition: “This Pulitzer Prize-winning play does discuss rape and does use the ‘N’ word. If you are uncomfortable about your child hearing or saying these things, please consider carefully before letting them audition for the play.”

For those unfamiliar with the storyline, the Guild provides a synopsis: “Set in Depression-era Maycomb, Ala., in 1935. Young Scout Finch lives with her father, Atticus Finch, an attorney, and her older brother, Jem. Tom Robinson, a black man, is accused of raping a white woman, Mayella. When Atticus is asked to represent him, he accepts, knowing that this decision will likely make him and his family unpopular in town. Through their neighborhood meanderings and the example of their father, Scout and Jem grow to understand the world isn’t always fair and that prejudice is a very real aspect of their world no matter how subtle it seems.”

Anyone planning to audition is asked to bring a self-portrait photo, a list of potential conflict dates for rehearsals, and be prepared to fill out an audtion application. Applicants will be asked to present lines on stage, etc. Youth roles will audition first.

Once rehearsals start, they will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. Performance dates are slated for Dec. 5-8, and 12-14.

Auditions are 6 p.m. today and Tuesday, Oct. 7, 8, The Dosta Playhouse, 122 N. Patterson St. More information about roles, characters, etc., visit and click on “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
