Counting the moments in Theatre Guild’s ‘9 to 5’

VALDOSTA — In the actual 9 to 5 workday, there are 480 moments. With a run time of about two and a half hours, there are substantially fewer moments in Theatre Guild Valdosta’s “9 to 5: The Musical” continuing this week, but there are still plenty of memorable moments.

Some of these include:

— The fantasy sequences where the show’s three main female coworkers share their vengeance dreams for dealing with their chauvinistic boss.

— The 1970s references planted throughout the show.

— Stephenie Austin’s ability to channel Dolly Parton in movements and singing voice as secretary Doralee.

— Michael Brogdon’s collapsing, darkening face playing company boss Franklin Hart’s realization he’s been poisoned.

— The interplay between the three main characters Austin, along with Brenda Brunston and Karen Cutler, as Violet and Judy, respectively.

— Diane Brunston’s silent, comedic turn as a white-haired patient loose in a hospital ward.

— Sementha Mathews’ performance as Roz, the office administrator in love with Mr. Hart, singing “Heart to Hart.”

— Jeani Synyard’s choreography, especially the dance number with “One of the Boys.” Jonathan Headen shines in the tap-dance sequence.

— Reatha Pavey is always fun as Margaret, the office’s secretarial sot.

— The ensemble cast is excellent throughout this show. There is a great amount of talent apparent as this collection of Guild regulars and numerous newcomers present large production numbers and perform small set pieces throughout the show. The Guild should cultivate this talent pool with hopes of casting some of these players in larger roles in the future.

Director Andrea Thom has assembled a big, bold show to open Theatre Guild Valdosta’s 25th anniversary season. She keeps the pace moving and the songs, dances and jokes coming.

There were a few microphone glitches early in the first act but all seemed ironed out within the first 20 minutes of the show.

This review is based on the Friday, Aug. 2, performance.
