Clinch County in Pictures

HOMERVILLE — If a picture is worth a thousand words then it’s a good thing Kenneth W. Bennett used photographs.

Had he replaced the dozens of photos in “A Pictorial Review of Clinch County, Georgia” with text, the book’s 190-plus pages would have stretched to hundreds upon hundreds of pages.

Along with co-author Joan J. Gregory, Bennett’s book explores the regions of Homerville and Clinch County’s past to present through its historic churches to its ties to the railroad and timber industry to blueberry farms and downtown business to the people who have made the area what it is today.

Though filled with page after page of photographs and illustrations, “A Pictorial Review” does include text to detail various points of Homerville-Clinch County history.

“I have always liked history, especially the local history of Homerville and Clinch County,” Bennett notes. “After realizing that Homerville had planned to celebrate the 150 years existing as a town, I thought that it would be necessary to write about Homerville and its people. The advantage of living here is that it’s a small community, where all of the people that live here are willing to help each other in a time of need. That’s what makes this small town so unique.”

“A Pictorial Review of Clinch County, Georgia” is the sequel to Bennett’s previous book, “Chronicle of Clinch County.”

This latest volume includes details on how the railroad brought growth to Clinch County, leading to divergent commerce in the Homerville area, Bennett says. “Also included are important milestones such as Argyle’s centennial, Homerville’s sesquicentennial, Clinch County’s centennial, and the celebration for the Bicentennial of America.”

Bennett views the book as “an overview of the continuous development of Clinch County.”

Kenneth W. Bennett will sign “A Pictorial Review of Clinch County, Georgia,” 2 p.m. Saturday, July 27, Clinch County Public Library, Homerville. Book cost: $39. More information: email phyllisbennett452@yahoo.com
