Bountiful Bouquet

VALDOSTA — Looking at her student Colin Wilson’s Valwood School Best in Show-winning canvas, art teacher Pat Smith sings the young artist’s praises.

A rainbow of roses and blooms erupt like still-life fireworks from a bowl. Wilson captures both the vivacity of bold colors and subtlety of soft shadows in a delightful and strong composition.

“It is the most beautiful painting I’ve ever seen in all my years of teaching,” Smith says.

Smith’s comment speaks volumes on Wilson’s work.

In addition to her long tenure at Valwood, Smith taught art at Valdosta High School and other schools. In total, she has taught art for the past 56 years.

“A rose is a rose is a rose,” Smith notes. “Senior Colin Wilson’s beautiful presentation of a vase of softly painted petals is outstanding this year. It far exceeds high school talent. ... He has a gift!”

Smith is proud of all of her students, who recently exhibited their artwork during a Valwood art show. Fellow art teacher Meredith Nuckols’ eighth-grade students also exhibited their works during the show.

“All of the students did a great job and have captured many delightful subjects to be enjoyed,” Smith said.

Approximately 150 pieces were exhibited in Valwood’s spring show.
