Two Valdosta State University Theatre & Dance pieces were selected this past weekend to be included in the prestigious Gala performance of the American College Dance Festival Association Southeast Regional Conference.
VSU Theatre & Dance faculty member Catherine Schaeffer’s choreography, “Marrow,” and VSU student Makeda Bryce’s dance were selected for performance.
“A fantastic recognition for us and all the students performing in the works that were adjudicated by the panel,” said Schaeffer. “This is our first Gala selection since starting our participation in the festival in 2002.”
The panel adjudicated approximately 50 dances during the conference. These dances were presented by school troupes from throughout the southeastern United States and California.
Twenty-one VSU dance students attended the conference. Eleven performed in adjudicated pieces; six others performed in informal presentations. Participants also attended workshops, seminars and performances.
“I have never seen our students so excited, motivated, grateful and honored,” Schaeffer said. “Once selected for the Gala, the culminating performance at the end of a four-day festival of classes and nightly adjudicated concerts, we went back into technical rehearsals and mental preparation to bring the best performances to the stage.
“They created art on the stage Saturday night and Makeda and I were happy with the performances delivered with conviction and clarity of intention.”
Bryce is pursuing her bachelor of fine arts in dance. She is scheduled to graduate in May.
“Makeda was also performing in ‘Marrow’ so she had a lot on her plate and did an excellent job of balancing performing my work and directing her own piece,” Schaeffer says.
