Back to the Prom!

VALDOSTA — The Greater Valdosta United Way is preparing for another busy August weekend this year.

On Aug. 23, organizers kick off this year’s United Way campaign with the annual Day of Caring, again with the Amazing Race theme. Then, on Saturday evening, Aug. 24, the United Way celebrates the new campaign with its second annual prom.

For the prom, participants are asked to wear styles from their high school prom era. So, if you graduated high school in the 1980s, for example, you can again rent that lime-green tux, or go for the big-hair look.

The prom also features a king and queen. Anyone can vote for the king and queen by making a donation in the nominee’s name to the Greater Valdosta United Way. Votes may be cast by visiting the website unitedwayvaldosta.org

This year's candidates are Jimmy Miller, Justin Martin, Michael Anderson, Shawn Panizzi, Ashley Henderson, and Jodi McSwain for prom king; Amanda Peacock, Emily Macheski-Preston, Heather Ferguson, Michelle Hogan, Terri Ball, and Theresa Johnson for queen.

The individuals receiving the most votes by monetary donations are elected prom queen and king.

There’s even a prom theme: The Arabian Nights, with all of the crepe paper and other items one may remember from past high school proms decorating the second floor of Downtown Valdosta’s City Market. Lloyd Carter serves as the evening’s DJ. Heavy

The United Way prom is intended to be a fun, informal-formal as well as a fundraiser, say Bobby Yarbrough, Greater Valdosta United Way executive director, and Jacqueline Lilly, public relations and special events director.

Daniel Folsom, a United Way board member, had the idea two years ago to throw a prom to support the organization.

Last year, dozens of couples attended. Organizers also stress that this prom is welcome fun for individuals or groups of friends who want to go stag and come without a date.
