New movie a ‘Holiday’ worth taking

-- — Movie Review: A follow-up to 1999’s “The Best Man,” this film entertains with plenty of laughs, but it is also an emotional piece that persuades. It follows the lives of nine people, friends since college. After 14 years, they reunite during the Christmas holidays. Time has passed, but old grievances remain fresh.

Amazingly, this group of people wants to spend time with each other. Some of these characters really dislike each other.

Each character also is undergoing problems of their own and with their mates. This fuels this screenplay, but it is also very soap-operatic in style. This downplays the screenplay a little, but this is a minor negative.

“Holiday” is still an engaging film. It easily makes you laugh and cry. This exists mainly because the actors know their roles, and they make the best of them.

These actors are seasoned professionals. They know how they want to portray their personas nicely. Terrence Howard is especially funny. He provides laughs when this plot needs it, especially near the end.

This beautiful cast scores points in that this film is more dramatic than the first. It is more emotional. You might want to take a tissue or two.

“Holiday” is an unsuspected treat. It entertains amply. The infighting becomes annoying, but nice drama and laughs are plentiful.

Grade: B- (A nice holiday retreat.)
