Birthday party honors Coody

VALDOSTA — A 90th birthday party for Jeanette Coody will be held Sept. 23 at The Crescent, with presents going to The Haven battered women’s shelter, which she founded.

Azalea City Woman’s Club, which Coody leads as president, is hosting the party from 2-4 p.m. at The Crescent, 904 N. Patterson St.

“This way, we can bless The Haven as well as her,” said ACWC member Lois Tyre.

Karen Yawn, shelter manager of The Haven, said Coody “has been there like a staple from the beginning (in the ’80s) until now. She’s kind of like your biggest fan: She’s there when you need a pick-up.

“(Jeanette) always seems to keep the needs of the (Haven) ladies in mind, no matter what group or organization she’s working with at the time. Recently, she did a sock drive with her Sunday School class (at First Baptist Church) and sent different sizes of socks to The Haven. That was unexpected.”

Led by Coody, Azalea City Woman’s Club also did a pocketbook collection, with members bringing pocketbooks from home to give to The Haven. They had been filled with hygiene products and a $10 bill in each one.

“I’ve used those for birthday presents for the adult ladies staying in the shelter,” Yawn said of the pocketbooks with money. “Sometimes that was all they got because they are so isolated from their families.”

For those who want to honor Coody, suggested gifts for The Haven include linens for twin beds, pillows and comforters; larger baby diapers, sizes 3-6; cleaning products, laundry detergent, paper towels, and toilet paper.

“If you want to perk up the lady (at The Haven), give a tube of lipstick, lotion or beauty products, even nail polish,” Tyre added.

“They can bring a checkbook, too. We’ve got a special place for checks.”

Those attending may RSVP with Jan Newton at 247-8910 or Lois Tyre at (229) 293-7202.
