ART: Albany Journey Revisited
By Dean Poling
VALDOSTA — Two years ago, several Albany-area artists led viewers on “A Picturesque Journey” with an exhibit at Smith Northview Hospital.
In that exhibit, Carole Hall Gum organized a show featuring fellow Albany artists Diane Johnson, Sally Sherman, Barbara DeLung, Anne Blakey, Pamela Johnson, Bertha Gunter, Betty Ramsey, Jean Weiner.
Well, they’re back, most of them anyway, along with one new artist, in “Picturesque Journey Revisited” at Smith Northview Hospital.
This journey includes seven Albany-area artists, all women, all painters. These artists are Shirley A. Robinson, Ann Blakely, Barbara DeLung, Carole Hall Gum, Diane Johnson, Jean Weiner, and Pam Johnson.
Gum has been a regular in South Georgia galleries and art shows. A member of the Valdosta-based Southern Artists League, Gum was an artist of the month in 2003 with works on display in the lobby of The Valdosta Daily Times’ Troup Street offices.
She is also a regular participant in Spring Into Art exhibits at the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts, and her work has been selected for reproduction in past Colson calendars.
Smith Northview Hospital hosts about a half dozen art shows per year, each lasting a couple of months. The hospital began the program a few years ago, and it regularly features South Georgia artists.
“Picturesque Journey Revisited” continues for the next several weeks, Smith Northview Hospital, 4280 North Valdosta Road.
